MONTICELLO - With the Tri-Rivers Conference and class 1A state qualifier meets right around the corner, Springville boys track coach Tyler Husak wanted to use the Monticello meet Thursday, April 22, as a way to try some new relay combinations in an attempt to see where his Orioles stack up against some of the Orioles’ qualifier competition.
Husak came away pleased with most of the outcomes.
“I was really happy with the way we competed and we made some nice improvements across the board,” he said. “It was a beautiful night in Monticello and we were looking for some PRs and were taking a look at a few combinations in relays. The sprint medley was one we wanted to play around with as it is really loaded in our district. This this gave us some idea of where we stack up.”
Field events led the early scoring for the Oriole boys as Dylan DeMean flew third in the long jump after a personal-best 18-foot, 9.5-inch effort while teammate Noah Brady also scored after his personal-best 17-4.25 performance placed sixth overall.
Luke Menster and Alex Koppes have both been consistent scorers in the high jump, and were at it once again in Monticello. Menster and Koppes both flew over the bar set at 5-8, with Menster taking third and Koppes fourth in the event.
Husak’s tinkering with the sprint medley relay led to a solid fourth-place performance as Menster, Koppes, DeMean and Brady combined to post a season-best time of 1-minute, 42.73-seconds.
The same foursome also guided the 4x400 relay team to another fourth-place showing turning in a 3:39.50 clocking while the team of Noah Rabe, Ryan Foley, Drew Feltes and Evan Robertson combined to lead the 4x100 relay to a 52.70 time, good enough to score the team sixth-place points.
Jack Hoogland added scoring for the Oriole boys as his personal-best 5:01.50 performance in the 1600-meter run was fourth overall while Robertson placed fifth in the 800 crossing the finish line with a time of 2:21.90.
Also competing for the Springville team at the Monticello meet were: 100- Robertson (9th) 12.20, Jackson Robinson Valley (16th) 13.30; 200- Foley (13th) 27.80; 400- Rabe (11th) 1:06; discus- Feltes (15th) 96-1, Tristan Malanaphy (21st) 65-6; shot put- Feltes (14th) 34-3.5, Malanaphy (19th) 27-7.5.
The Orioles scored 32 points at the meet to place sixth against the eight-team field defeating East Buchanan (24 points) and Central City (23). The host Panthers cruised to their own meet title tallying 144 points while Center Point-Urbana was runner-up with 105.
