WYOMING - Year after year you can count on the Midland baseball team to not only be competitive within the Tri-Rivers Conference (TRC), but also play with a flair and style that is enjoyable to watch.
The 2020 campaign was no different, even with the struggles that the COVID-19 pandemic brought with it.
The Eagles were one of the top teams in the league’s East division, posting a 5-4 record against East opponents while also sporting a 7-8 mark overall against Tri-Rivers teams.
Those solid marks earned Midland an impressive six players named to All-TRC East division teams, led by first-team honors for senior Alex Smith and freshman Zain Sauer, who were named utility and infield picks, respectively.
Seniors Jensen Dodge (outfield), Wilson Buckwalter (infield) and junior Iziek Soper (first-base) were named second-team selections while senior Sawyer Hansen was named to the honorable mention team.
Smith had a phenomenal campaign for the Eagles leading the team by not only hitting .429 against divisional pitching, but his 2.30 earned run average and 24.1 innings pitched and 34 strikeouts sparked a solid Midland pitching staff.
Sauer drilled baseballs at a .434 clip overall this past season and .404 against conference pitching and also topped the team with 15 runs batted in. Sauer logged 8.2 innings on the mound and posted a 0.81 ERA while fanning 11 batters.
Dodge was another staple on the hill for the Eagles hurling 20 innings overall logging a 5.95 ERA while hitting .270 in league play.
Buckwalter had another outstanding campaign guiding the Eagle infield while also hitting .273 overall.
Soper broke through in 2020 hitting .405 against TRC pitching and also helped out defensively playing first base and catcher.
Hansen closed his career in style helping the Eagle pitching staff working 12 innings allowing a mere eight hits while posting a 2.33 ERA with 10 strikeouts.

(Lisbon); first base- Conor Gruver, so. (Easton Valley); infielders- Sauer, Carson Fuegen, fr. (Easton Valley) and Cristian Prull, so. (Bellevue-Marquette); outfielders- Austin Franzen, jr. (Easton Valley), Brady Templeton, sr. (Bellevue-Marquette) and Matt Brinker, jr. (Bellevue-Marquette); utility-Smith
Earning All-TRC East division second-team honors were: pitchers- Brian Forret, sr. (Calamus-Wheatland) and Tyson Scott, so. (Lisbon); catcher- Brig Bormann, so. (Easton Valley); first base- Soper; infielders- Buckwalter, Chase Knoche, jr. (Calamus-Wheatland) and Aza Berthal, jr. (Bellevue-Marquette); outfielders- Dodge, Aidan Gruver, so. (Easton Valley) and Devyn Decious, jr. (Lisbon); utility- Cole VanderHeiden, fr. (Calamus-Wheatland).
Earning honorable mention status with Hansen were: Arstin Henning, jr. (Calamus-Wheatland), Jessen Weber, sr. (Easton Valley), Hunter Clark, fr. (Lisbon), Carson Michels, jr. (Bellevue-Marquette) and J.R. Wauford, so. (Clinton Prince of Peace).
Calamus-Wheatland’s Caleb Banowetz was named Tri-Rivers Conference East division Most Valuable Player helping the Warriors to a 5-1 divisional record, good enough to place second.
Easton Valley’s Derek Erwin was named East division Coach of the Year after guiding the River Hawks to a title with a perfect 6-0 mark within the East division and 12-0 league record overall.
