DURANT — Fresh off competing at their own club tournament just a week earlier, members of the Wapsi Country Club wanted to make a statement taking part at the annual Women’s Eastern Iowa event Sunday, Aug. 6, at the Wahkonsa Country Club in Durant.
Wapsi posted their best finish at the prestigious tournament in more than a half decade, coming through with a 625 team score that slotted the Anamosa team third among the eight competing clubs.
Only Anamosa’s Fawn Creek Country Club (580) and Monticello (604) tallied lower scores as Jones County clubs dominated the day.
Leading the charge for the Wapsi team was Debbie Schultz, who made her way through the par-36 Wahkonsa course with an 86 that finished just outside the tournament top-10.
Schultz’s first tour through the nine-hole course saw a card of 40 before she finished with a 46 to place in a tie for 11th overall.
Jenny Houska came through with a card of 87 that also placed in the tournament top-20.
Houska tallied a 43 on her opening nine holes of play before coming in with a 44 to place in a tie for 15th at the event.
Mary Zabloudil (45-44) and Hannah Houska (42-47) added two more Wapsi scores in the 80s, finishing with solid scores of 89 each, just missing the tournament top-20 individuals overall.
Laurie Woods made her way through the Wahkonsa course with a 93 (44-49) while teammate Cassie Caldwell tallied a 94 (49-45).
Jeanie Meehan (43-52), Angie Ditch (48-48) and Deb Byers (52-46) also helped the Wapsi team to the third-place finish turning in cards of 95, 96 and 98, respectively.
Wapsi got off to a great start opening with a nine-hole score of 305 before finishing with a 320.
