Yanda among greats

Editor:

Marshal Yanda was just awarded the NFL All-Decade Team, along with his eighth Pro Bowl. Marshal has received 25 NFL awards. Here are some more of his top awards: Ravens MVP, the Bruce Matthews Award for being the top NFL offensive lineman and his highest honor is winning Super Bowl XLVII.

Comparing just the number of Pro Bowls, Marshal’s eight equal or passed 217 of the 286 players already enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This is 75 percent of Hall of Famers.

Here are two dozen hall of famers Marshal has passed with his eight Pro Bowls: Troy Aikman, Marcus Allen, Sammy Baugh, Terry Bradshaw, Earl Campbell, Larry Csonka, Terrell Davis, Eric Dickerson, Mike Ditka, Tony Dorsett, Carl Eller, Marshall Faulk, Red Grange, Bob Griese, Ray Guy, Michael Irvin, Jim Kelly, Randy Moss, Joe Namath, Orlando Pace, Kenny Stabler, Bart Starr, Roger Staubach and YA Tittle.

The NFL 75th Anniversary Team had seven guards: John Hannah, Jim Parker and Gene Upshaw. Together they average: 8 1/3 Pro Bowls, 1 1/3 Super Bowl titles, 12 years in the NFL and 178 games played.

The NFL 100th Anniversary Team has seven guards: Larry Allen, Dan Fortmann, John Hannah, Bruce Matthews, Randall McDaniel, Jim Parker and Gene Upshaw. Together they average 10 Pro Bowls, one Super Bowl/NFL title, 15 years in the NFL and 195 games played. All seven of the guards were enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Marshal’s NFL career so far includes: eight Pro Bowls, one Super Bowl title, 13 years in the NFL and 175 games played. Marshal’s career is very similar to these Hall of Fame guards. The NFL 100th Anniversary Team is the greatest team ever assembled.

I took my three sons to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The first person we saw wearing an NFL jersey had on a Baltimore Ravens jersey. I told my boys that is a good omen. I also told them Marshal will be walking through these doors someday as a member of the Hall of Fame.
