Recently, Tim Hollett published a letter to the editor in your paper regarding retiring Anamosa's Ralph Beardsley's football jersey No. 20. Tim has been making a valiant effort in getting this task done for some time and we, the Norton boys, are totally in support of this action.

In fact, this is so long overdue that getting this accomplished is a “no brainer.” Just a few of Ralph's accolades: voted No. 1 Iowa High School Athlete of the Year in 1941,  selected 1st Team All-State twice (1939 and 1940) from all the players in the state,  major participant of the 47-game undefeated streak in the state of Iowa football (1937-1942), received votes for the Iowa High School All-Century Football Team (1914 - 2014), went undefeated all four years for Anamosa high school football and, one last note, in our opinion Ralph would have become Anamosa’s first professional football player instead of our brother Don Norton, who achieved this honor in 1960.

Ralph decided to enter World War II instead and serve our country.

Hey, it is time for the Anamosa school board to act now and make this happen for Ralph, the Beardsley family and the town of Anamosa.
