He graduated from Ames High School in 1968 and began his law enforcement career by working as a security officer for Iowa State University. Ron later worked as a police officer in Jewell, where he became the police chief. In 1979, Ron moved to Anamosa, where he served as an officer on the Anamosa Police Department.
