Ronald Lee Jones was born April 23, 1949, in Ames, to Clarence "Buster" and Katrina Allene (Wilhour) Jones. He graduated from Ames High School in 1968 and began his law enforcement career by working as a security officer for Iowa State University. Ron later worked as a police officer in Jewell, where he became the police chief. In 1979, Ron moved to Anamosa, where he served as an officer on the Anamosa Police Department.
