General Manager of the Great Jones County Fair, John Harms, provided the community with a sneak peek at what the fair has to offer people next month.
The theme for the fair this year is “To the Moon and Back,” a nod to the 50th anniversary of the moon landing that occurred July 20, 1969. Harms said the idea occurred to him as he read the biography, “First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong.”
“It was a time in our history, 1969, when there were a lot of things unrestful around the planet. We were behind in the race to space,” he said. “But for that brief moment…it was a time when all those things across the planet really got put on the backburner.”
To mark the occasion, in between acts on July 20, a video montage including footage of the landing and John F. Kennedy’s famous speech will be played. Attendees of the annual preview event got a preview of the montage that will play on the night in question.
In highlighting some of the new attractions that people can expect, including a new food offering: last year’s people’s choice winner at the Iowa State Fair Applelicious will be at the fair this year.
Harms also touched on a few improvements people can expect to see, including improvements to the fairground’s cellular coverage and a continued commitment to keeping fairgoers safe.
